Overclass Chutzpah

Presenting the middle class — even the upper middle class — as the engine of Wall Street is one thing.  Attributing ethics to these navel-gazing SUV polishers is another.  But suggesting that “accountability” could ever apply to the whole financial tail-chase?  That, as they say, is priceless:

Of course, the true message, as Leslie Savan classically suggested would so often be the case, is mere and simple flattery of the target audience.

Self-glorification is a time honored tradition, but it is true that it seems to intensify lately. I have the misfortune of observing SUV polishers in real life, ‘soldiering on’ as if they were indeed the keepers of civilization, rather one of its primary sicknesses.

    But hey, at least we can monetize it: while they lock themselves in car-dependent suburbia, the rest of us, unafflicted with irrational fear of poor people can find much cheaper housing elsewhere.
